A new report released by the Republican majority in the Nassau County Legislature finds that some multimillion-dollar homes have been excused from property taxes.
The report says a collection of homes valued as high as $4 million are listed as tax free under their property costs

Susan Johnson and Owen Cumisky, talked about their experiences with reassessment.
“Basically I’m here because I’m still trying to understand why my assessment is not both fair and accurate,” Johnson said.
“Then one day, in 2018, my taxes went from $12,000 to $26,000. Overnight,” Cumisky related of the new assessment. “I don’t know if anyone here can afford $1,000 a month out of their daily budget to afford such ridiculous reassessment.”

Nassau Democratic lawmakers block GOP bill for assessor referendum

Democrats in the Nassau County Legislature blocked a Republican-sponsored bill to set a November referendum asking voters if they support moving to an elected, rather than an appointed, assessor.
Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello (R-New Hyde Park) said the Curran administration was "secretive" and "arrogant" in its handling of the first reassessment in nearly a decade.
Nicolello said: "The assessment function is one of the most important functions that a government can do. Quite simply if you get it wrong, you can have a lack of fairness, of someone paying an unfair amount of taxes. You can literally cause people to lose their homes."

The legislation is seeking to force officials to honor a settlement with residents seeking an explanation of the recent reassessment.
Nassau lawmakers introduced legislation Thursday with aims to get county officials to honor a settlement — reached over residents' lawsuit — by posting reassessment data on the county's website, county officials say.
The settlement, a legal agreement reached last October, includes a provision where the county agreed to post the property data so that residents can access it on the county's website, but the information still has not been posted, according to county officials.
